Anne Rogers Riddell

In 2015, I led a successfully-funded and executed Kickstarter project named Berlin Boozehound Spirit Infusion Kits. The project was composed of four separate kits:

  • Alpha Gin, a classic London Dry style gin
  • Noble Gin, a hopped gin using Tettnang hops
  • Voyager Rum, a spiced dark rum with a blend of warm herbs
  • Rosa Mate, a sweet tea vodka infusion inspired by Berlin & Club Mate

Each kit contained organic botanicals, a 700ml bottle with a custom label to display your infusion, a funnel, filter paper to strain the infusion, easy-to-follow instructions, and a unique cocktail card. I devised the botanical recipes & overall concept, while the artistic direction & visual design were handled by Brent Riddell and German translation & marketing was managed by Harry Keller. Currently, Alpha, Noble, & Voyager kits are available via Etsy; Rosa Mate was a Kickstarter exclusive blend.

In 2014, I wrote my Brewing & Distilling MSc thesis “Development of a commercial gin recipe incorporating sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) purée, using a trial-and-error sensory technique” to complete my degree at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. This thesis project honed my talents in recipe development for spirits, particularly for the requested specifications of a gin that would be juniper-led and replacing the traditional citrus peel with locally-sourced sea buckthorn. The sea buckthorn berry has been traditionally prized as a health additive for its high antioxidant levels and beneficial flavonols & phenolic compounds; it provides a tart complement to the classic gin recipe.

In 2013, I wrote a literary review of the chemical properties of absinthe components, particularly the often misunderstood and incorrectly maligned compound thujone. This review included a discussion of the historical and current European Union definitions of absinthe.
